Ghanaian Sculptor El Anatsui Named Among Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People of 2023
El Anatsui, a renowned Ghanaian sculptor, has been named among Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People of 2023. The artist is recognized for his unique and creative use of empty plastic bottles and their covers to create stunning works of art that attract tourists from all over the world.
Anatsui is the only Ghanaian listed in the ‘Artists’ category, among other notable figures in politics, entertainment, and sports. These include King Charles, Angela Bassett, Beyoncé, Michael B Jordan, Joe Biden, Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi, and the current President of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu.
Anatsui rose to fame in 1992 with his “Erosion” art, which depicted erosion in Ghana during the 1990s. The work became an instant hit, capturing the attention of the international community. Anatsui was later conferred with the Golden Lion Award for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale awards in 2025.
