Ghanaian Sculptor El Anatsui Named Among Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People of 2023

El Anatsui, a renowned Ghanaian sculptor, has been named among Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People of 2023. The artist is recognized for his unique and creative use of empty plastic bottles and their covers to create stunning works of art that attract tourists from all over the world.

Anatsui is the only Ghanaian listed in the ‘Artists’ category, among other notable figures in politics, entertainment, and sports. These include King Charles, Angela Bassett, BeyoncĂ©, Michael B Jordan, Joe Biden, Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi, and the current President of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu.

Anatsui rose to fame in 1992 with his “Erosion” art, which depicted erosion in Ghana during the 1990s. The work became an instant hit, capturing the attention of the international community. Anatsui was later conferred with the Golden Lion Award for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale awards in 2025.

BBC and other international media outlets have showcased Anatsui’s works to demonstrate how an African artist can transform waste into usable artifacts that generate income. His artistic creations have brought pride and recognition to Ghana, and he remains a source of inspiration to many young artists.

Anatsui is an alumnus of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), and his family currently resides in Nigeria. His works have not only elevated his status in the art world but also highlight the importance of repurposing waste products for environmental sustainability.
